THE NORMAN NICHOLSON HOUSE PROJECT

Living above the shop

Picture
Time was when it was commonplace for the family of a small trader to live on the same premises as the business - 'above the shop'. The family of Joseph and Rose Nicholson was no different. Joe ran his gents' outfitters shop in St George's Terrace, while behind his emporium with its rolls of cloth and drawers of collars and handkerchiefs was the family area - a living room behind, with bedrooms and a front parlour upstairs. Our project aims to recapture this era through clever restoration of the interior to take us back to a time when Joe's business and the town in general were booming. We are in Millom's Conservation Area and look forward to making a positive contribution to this celebration of the town's heritage.
